Wii U Sales Surpass Xbox One in Final Week of 2013 Selling 320,000 Units During Christmas

Nintendo's Wii U has beaten out Microsoft's Xbox One in the sales department for the week before Christmas.

The Wii U sold 319,860 units internationally while the Xbox One sold just 307,366, according to VGChartz.

Fans of the Microsoft console, however, have highlighted that the Xbox One is still not available in Japan, and they that was the main reason for the lower sales. However, other critics have pointed out that Microsoft's videogame game systems have never been that successful in that nation.

The Wii U appears to have a new lease of life thanks to the debut of Super Mario 3D World.

Nintendo's 3DS handheld system and Sony's PS4 led the way this past holiday season with 1.07 million systems and 656,655 units sold respectively.

To make matters worse, the Xbox 360 and PS3 sold more than the Wii U and Xbox One during the foremost shopping week before Christmas according to these approximations.

Wii U has a superior roster of elite video games at the present time compared to the other next-gen gaming systems.

In addition, The Wii is more affordable than the PS4 ($100 less) and Xbox One ($200 less) making it a very eye-catching buy.

However, experts remain doubtful about the Wii U's sales prediction. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter doubts whether the system will ultimately sell over 20 million gaming systems in the next two years.

"This is how it goes," said Pachter. "We expect Sony's and Microsoft's new consoles to thrive over the next three years, with cumulative worldwide sales of 37.7 million PS4 and 29 million Xbox One consoles by year-end 2016. We do not expect Nintendo's Wii U to fare as well, with cumulative sales of under 20 million by 2016."
