Windows Phone 8.1 Release Date: Word Flow Assistant And Cortana Added

The new major update for the Windows phone operating system will be available this month. The 'Windows Phone 8.1' update will roll out onto existing Windows Phone 8 users during the first two weeks of July,' says a tweet by the Microsoft Twitter account in a response to a customer's question.

The update is expected to be released in July and continue throughout August.

The 'Windows Phone 8.0' was released in October 2012, and The 'Windows Phone 8.1' has been scheduled for release after 20 months, a very long wait. The revision of the OS involved a complete revamp of the program's code.

The Nokia Lumia 630, Nokia Lumia 930 and the Nokia Lumia 635 get the Windows 8.1 update out of the box. Making the device easier to personalize and customize is the basic feature of this update, sources say. Also, this new update allows users to choose new themes for the home screen. Users can also choose any custom picture to serve as the home screen background, while having the theme look entirely different.

Also, a new notification panel called the action center has been added. This panel can be accessed by swiping the screen from the top, just like the Android notification bar. A new addition, called the Word Flow Keyboard, lets users type with swiping gestures. Cortana, the voice assistant, is another exciting feature that has apparently been added.

Some also say that the General Distribution Release (GDR) is expected soon, with the original enhancements to arrive after.
