Wimbledon 2014 Update, Schedule: Tumultous Tuesday At All England Club Centre Court
Tuesday's Wimbledon matches started out clear and calm at the All England Club, only to erupt into chaos and shock as title aspirants Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova were defeated back-to-back on the Centre Court.
The worst shock of the tournament, however, came on Wednesday when defending champion Andy Murray was knocked out of Wimbledon by Grigor Dimitrov.
These upsets were not only unexpected, but also sent the men's and women's singles draws into total disarray.
On Tuesday it was was Nick Kyrgios, a 19-year-old wild card entry, who defeated Rafael Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Last week, Kyrgios made headlines for saving nine match points and defeating Richard Gasquet in a second-round game.
Although Kyrgios was playing against the world No. 1, he was fearless and blasted groundstrokes with full gusto, took his chances in the first-set-tie-break, thereby stepping out to achieve a one-set lead over Nadal. Although Nadal lost the first of the three set matches here, everyone expected him to make a comeback.
Unfortunately for him, Nadal did nothing of the sort on Tuesday; while Kyrgios continued coming at him persistently and ending the match with a bang, winning the biggest game of his career so far.
While Serena Williams and Li Na were both already out of the singles draw, odds were in favor of Maria to win the title. As luck would have it, No. 9 seed German Angelique Kerber crushed any such possibility on Tuesday, battling from the back-court with never-ending steadiness and power.
In the women's singles, Sharapova, who won Wimbledon in 2004, looked lackluster on Tuesday. Down 5-2 in the third set, Sharapova seemed as if she might make a comeback when she pulled the score to 4-5 and saved six match points. However, Kerber won an especially long point when the Sharapova netted an easy forehand and subsequently Kerber, who was a semi-finalist in Wimbledon in 2012, missed a backhand lob.
As a result of this unpredictable upset, Kerber will meet No. 13 seed Genie Bouchard in the quarter-finals.
