Will Smith New NFL Movie: ‘Game Brain’ Explores Ex-Football Players’ Degenerative Brain Disease

Will Smith's newest project, Game Brain, is going to be a tribute to Steeler's center Mike Webster. The film is based on a 2009 GQ article discussing Dr. Bennet Omalu's findings on football-related brain injuries evident to that of deceased former athletes of the sport.

Smith, who plays the role of Omalu, takes the audience into a detailed account of an investigation following Webster's death in 2002. Medical reports led experts into the discovery of a CTE degenerative disease in Webster's brain.

According to Pittsburgh Tribune, the NFL refused to give out comments and reiterated through a spokesman that concerned filmmakers have not reached out to the organization. In return, Sony Pictures was awarded with $14.4 million worth of tax credits. The publication reported that the amount of the tax credit was supposed to come together with another film titled Brilliance. Smith, 45, refused to take the role under Legendary Pictures.

In relation to the film, a GQ article authored by Jeanne Marie Laskas reads:

"In the autopsy room, Omalu snapped on his gloves and approached the slab. He noted that Mike Webster's body was sixty-nine inches long and weighed 244 pounds. He propped up the head and picked up his scalpel and sliced open the chest and cracked open the ribs. He took out the heart and found everything he expected of a man who was believed to have died of a heart attack, as was the case with Webster."

Sony Pictures has yet to announce the release date of the film.
