Will Orlando Magic Owner Rich DeVos Be Next to Be Banned By NBA After Donald Sterling? DeVos Labeled 'Homophobic' for Biblical Marriage Stance
A new report out has warned that the NBA may have put itself on a slippery slope by banning the LA Clippers' owner for life - some say activists will jump on the chance to push for further bans against other owners.
One person already in the crosshairs appears to be Orlando Magic owner Rich DeVos, who has been labeled by gay activists as "anti-gay" and "bigoted" due to his outspoken support of the biblical definition of marriage - that being a union between one man and one woman.
DeVos is no stranger to attracting criticism from gay activists. In an interview with the Grand Rapids Press a number of years back he commented on the hatred he had received from gay activists as he refused to be "sympathetic" to their "requests for special treatment". He said, "I have been hung in effigy by the gay community for a long time, from when I was on President Reagan's first AIDS commission. From that point on, that's when they were hanging me in effigy because I wasn't sympathetic to all of their requests for special treatment. Because at that time it was always somebody else's fault. And I said, 'You are responsible for your actions, too, you know. Conduct yourself properly,' which is a pretty solid Christian principle. You've got to take responsibility for your actions."
A recent Orlando Sentinel report compared DeVos' previous statements to the controversy surrounding Clippers owner Donald Sterling's racist comments. Sterling was recently banned for life from the NBA after he was recorded giving a racist rant to his ex-girlfriend V. Stiviano.
Although a majority of voices have praised the NBA for its firm stance against Sterling, others - although backing the stance that Sterling needed to be disciplined - have said that a life ban sets a particularly worrying precedent that could be abused by others in the future.
Dallas Mavericks owner and "Shark Tank" star Mark Cuban, is one of those who has his concerns about the recent ban decision.
"What Donald said was wrong. It was abhorrent," said Cuban to The Orlando Sentinel. "There's no place for racism in the NBA, any business I'm associated with. But at the same time, that's a decision I make. I think you've got to be very, very careful when you start making blanket statements about what people say and think, as opposed to what they do. It's a very, very slippery slope."
And next in line to fall on that slippery slope, in many people's opinion, will be Orlando Magic owner Rich Devos.
On the "CNN Newsroom", anchor Rachel Nichols also highlighted that Devos' traditional Christian views on marriage have seen him labeled as homophobic.
"Rich DeVos, who's the owner of the Orlando Magic, has made comments that a lot of people consider homophobic. He's campaigned against rights for gays. He's said that gay marriage is, gay people asking for 'special privileges.' There's a lot of people who've made a lot of comments in those positions that could be construed as problematic," said Nichols on April 29.
The co-founder of Amway has owned the Magic franchise since 1991.
