Why is Cristina Yang Leaving Grey's Anatomy? Sandra Oh Leaving in Season 10 Finale Drama
Sandra Oh will leave ABC's hit drama series "Grey's Anatomy" after the Season 10 finale episode on May 15. After Thursday night's episode, fans will say goodbye to Dr. Cristina Yang when she leaves Grey Sloan Memorial for good.
Oh, along with Ellen Pompeo (who plays as the lead protagonist Dr. Meredith Grey), Patrick Dempsey (who plays as Dr. Derek Shepherd aka McDreamy), James Pickens, Jr. (who plays as Dr. Richard Webber) and Chandra Wilson (who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey), have all been on the critically acclaimed medical drama series since it began in 2005. Now Oh bids the series and her memorable character farewell.
Oh's co-stars reflected on the actress' top memorable moments during the show's 10-year run recently.
"The Cristina-Meredith scene that will always stick with me is Sandra and I roaming through the forest in Big Bear, looking for Cristina Yang's shoe. We've kicked some serious acting ass together. I am very proud of the work we've done together over the last decade," said Pompeo to TV Guide.
Like Pompeo, Dempsey will also miss the moments he spend with his longtime co-star.
"One of my favorite moments with Sandra actually came from this season, when we sat down and had a really nice conversation reflecting on the past 10 years," said Dempsey.
Kevin McKidd plays Dr. Yang's ex-husband, whose life may be changed forever when his former TV wife will leave the series to possibly rekindle her relationship with Isaiah Washington's character Dr. Preston Burke, who made a special guest appearance in the "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" episode on May 1.
"I'm just really sad about it. We're having a great time during this last season, and Sandra is in great form. It's going to feel like a huge hole in this show. No one can fill her shoes. I wish her all the best. She's ready for the next phase in her life. She's always going to be my friend. She's one of my best friends. I feel tearful talking about it. It reminds me of how great that chemistry is," said McKidd.
The 42-year-old performer previously commented in another interview regarding her upcoming departure from the role that made her a major star in Hollywood.
"Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," said Oh to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. (Cristina) wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go."
"Grey's Anatomy" Season 10 Finale airs on Thursday May 15, 2014 at 9 p.m on the ABC network.
