Watch Online as the Texas Rangers VS Seattle Mariners play Tonight!
Veteran lefty pitcher Joe Saunders trys to help his Seattle Mariners end a six-game losing streak this Friday night. They face the hot-hitting Texas Rangers, a team that has dominated left-handed pitchers all season.
Saunders is 3-4 this season so far, with a 5.64 ERA but is currently 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA at home. He's 0-4 with an 11.25 ERA in five games on the road. "This is just kind of a fluky thing," said Saunders after receiving a no-decision at Cleveland on Sunday. But, he looks to rebound from his poor road performance, as he currently owns a 1.72 career ERA at Safeco Field in 13 outings.
This doesn't bother the Texas Rangers (30-17) though, as they are 11-5 when facing left-handed starters. Saunders numbers also vary from home to away with the Rangers:
Home vs. TEX: 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA in six starts
Away vs. TEX: 0-7 with a 9.91 ERA in seven starts.
One of those wins came last year, when Saunders was a starter for Baltimore in a 5-1 win at Texas in wild-card playoff game. This season, he only gave up one unearned run over seven frames in a 3-1 home loss April 13. But then he took a step back on the road, by allowing seven over 4 2/3 six days later in a 7-0 road defeat.
Saunders could also get a chance to face Texas prospect Jurickson Profar, called up Sunday when Ian Kinsler was placed on the DL. Texas will has faced right-handed pitchers for the last 12 games. So, Jeff Baker is expected to be in the lineup as a result. The infielder bats .344 against left-handers and has already homered off Saunders once this year.
"That's part of baseball and the way it works sometimes," Baker told the Rangers' official website. "Sometimes it rains lefties and sometimes it doesn't."
