'Walking Dead' Actor Scott Wilson Talks Hershel's Death in Mid Season 4 Finale Episode "Too Far Gone"

Walking Dead said goodbye to several beloved characters Sunday night during the mid season finale Sunday night at AMC. Sure fans will miss the Governor and we still don't know where baby Judith is, but perhaps the most heart-wrenching loss is the prison [and show's] resident moral compass Hershel.

Whether it's the rehabilitation of civilization, featured in the beginning episodes of Season 4, guiding Rick back to leader of the group, or taking care of the victims of the flu-like epidemic that took over the prison.

Talking to Zap2It after his character's final episode, Scott Wilson told season 4 showrunner, Scott Gimple he was "making a big mistake" taking him off but that he understood the decision was not an easy one.

"It's certainly not a comfortable position for him [Gimple] to be in because, I guess, the nature of the show is you know that someone's going to go, and to decide who it's going to be is not a fun thing, I would imagine, for him to go through."

As most Walking Dead fans know, the cast throws what they call a "death dinner" after a major member is killed off. Wilson says the dinners serve as a great way to give closure to the experience they've all shared on set.

"Yeah, well, we had that for Hershel and David [Morrissey] We had a joint death dinner. It was neat, having an appreciation from the rest of the cast. You bond over a period of time, and it's an acknowledgement of their appreciation of working with you. It was touching. It's very nice. I know I've been to other dinners where I wasn't the one that they were having it for, and it's a good thing. It was a good evening."

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns in February on AMC.
