'The Walking Dead' on AMC Sets Series Rating Record
The Walking Dead is still on top. AMC's post-zombie apocalypse thriller attracted more viewers for the Sunday Season 3 finale than any other scripted show on television this season.
"Welcome to the Tombs" garnered a total of 12.4 million viewers surpassing the mid-season February premiere, which recorded an impressive 12.3 million. History Channel's The Bible miniseries had high ratings hopes for its finale episode featuring scenes from the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. With 11.7 million viewers, The Bible finale was The Walking Dead's only real competition for the night.
Even the companion show, Talking Dead, [a recap show for every new Walking Dead episode] stood strong against HBO's Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere. Talking Dead posted 5.2 million while Game of Thrones drew only 4.4 million.
The zombie smash conclusion also posted Season 3's highest ratings among adults 18-49 (the demographic that determines advertising rates...cha-ching!). The Walking Dead also beat out the NCAA basketball tournament on CBS which only attracted 8.1 million in the 18-49 demographic.
"Two words: Grateful. Dead. It's a joy that we get to work with such tremendous talent to make 'The Walking Dead' and 'Talking Dead' come to life for audiences that continue to engage and grow," said AMC president, Charlie Collier. "In just three seasons, 'The Walking Dead' has become a pop-culture phenomenon, entertaining millions of passionate viewers and obliterating traditional lines between cable and broadcast television."
