'Vikings on History Channel: Episode 5, "Raid" Summary
History Channel's Vikings aired Episode 5, "Raid" of the nine-part miniseries Easter Sunday. Ragnar's future is in turmoil as his relationship with Earl Haraldson deteriorates even more.
Episode 5 of Vikings kicks off in the Great Hall of Kattegat with a seer reading Earl Haraldson's future. The seer reveals that Ragnar Lothbrok searches aims to kill him. But does God favor Earl Haraldson or Ragnar more? In a web of paranoia Earl Haraldson burns Ragnar's home and farm as a precautionary measure. Though Ragnar is injured badly, he's still alive and hidden safely. At this point Ragnar knows he needs to figure out a way to win his freedom back.
Vikings is an extremely successful show because it takes viewers back to the vicious and largely unknown world of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). Supposedly based on a real Viking warrior, Ragnar craves exploration-mainly raiding. His claim to fame is his fighting prowess and ability to sail to distant shores across the ocean. His ambition and popularity threatens the local government, namely Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne).
Though Vikings may seem like a show built on senseless violence, it's just as much a story about camaraderie familial love. The love between Ragnar and his wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) comes across as affectionate and warm. The prisoner monk Athelstan (George Blagden) also provides an interesting dynamic as his Christian principles clash with the Vikings' pagan culture.
Vikings was created and written by Michael Hirst whose also worked on medieval adaptations such as Elizabeth and The Tudors.
Tune in for Episode 6 of Vikings Sundays on History Channel at 8/7c.
