'Vikings' on History Channel Renewed for Season 2 / Episode 7, "A King's Ransom" Preview [VIDEO]

Vikings, one of several new epic miniseries' from History Channel has just confirmed for a second season. Vikings was a bit of a risk for History Channel, being the first scripted drama for the network. Soon followed by the heavenly success of The Bible, History Channel became one of the most watched networks on TV this spring.

Vikings may have a relatively unknown cast, but sometimes anonymity is a good thing. Former Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel stars as Vikings' lead character Ragnar Lothbrok. The remaining cast of Vikings includes Gabriel Byrne as Earl Haraldson (who was killed in episode 6, "Burial of the Dead"), Clive Standen (Ragnar's brother Rollo), Katheryn Winnick (Ragnar's wife Lagertha), Jessalyn Gilsig (Siggy, Haraldson's wife), and Gustaf Skarsgard (skilled shipbuilder and friend to Ragnar), among many more.

Vikings creator and writer Michael Hirst isn't new to medieval adaptations for TV. Before Vikings Hirst was best known for his work on The Tudors and The Borgias.

Only taking 5 episodes of the first season for History Channel to sign on for season 2, the network is excited about the prospects of the show and scripted television in general.

"Vikings is a win win for us. As our first scripted series, Vikings has paid off in a big way with critical acclaim, strong ratings and a passionate, loyal fan base. It came out of the gate strong and has stayed on top, solidifying History as a major player in the scripted genre, just as we are in reality," said Dirk Hoogstra, Executive Vice President of Development and Programming for the History channel.

Tune into Vikings episode 7, "A King's Ransom" on History Channel Sundays at 10/9c.
