There are rumors that claim popular 'Vampire Diaries' characters Damon Salvatore (played by Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) might not return for the upcoming sixth season.

Executive Producer Julie Plec addressed the rumors in a recent interview regarding the two major characters of the long running horror series on the CW network.

"Where they are is part of the mystery of the beginning of the season. It's not torturous, but it's by no means a roller coaster ride of fun. If nothing else, it's a bit of an existential experience," said Plec to TVLine, "They'll be aware that they're no longer where they thought they were - but they're also not dead, per se. They'll be asking a lot of questions, along with the audience, including: What's going on? Where the hell are we? And how do we get home?"

In another interview, Plec talked about Damon's love ones (his brother Stefan and his ex-girlfriend Elena) who will deal with his disappearance in the upcoming season.

"One of the big questions you'll be asking when we get back is how did she pick up the pieces?" Plec to TVGuide, "Or did she pick up the pieces at all? When we come back, several months have passed and Elena has returned to her life at school and seems to be doing well, but the mystery is really how well is she doing? And she's got some odd and awkward coping mechanisms that inform a lot about where she is and how she's handling this particular grief."

In the same interview, Plec also talked about whether or not Stefan and Elena will rekindle their relationship in the next season as they both grieve for Damon and Bonnie.

"Well, speaking of coping mechanisms, each of them have a very specific method of how they're dealing with it and they find a strange appreciation of each other's methods even though they're not necessarily healthy," said Plec, "They connect over the fact that sometimes it takes extreme choices to move past something that has hurt you so deeply. So we will see their friendship able to be strong and healthy in spite of the way each of them individually are dealing with their loss."

The 'Vampire Diaries' Season 6 will return on October 2, 2014 on the CW network.
