‘Utopia’ Canceled or Renewed? Struggles In Ratings, Network Talks Cancellation As Viewership Drops

Fox surprised its viewers when it announced that 'Utopia', its new reality television show, has been set to air for 52 straight weeks. Some viewed Fox's move to be quite ambitious, despite having a good concept for the show.

Unfortunately, the show's rating have been rather unimpressive, and many are beginning to wonder if the series will be able to hold on.

The show centers on a group of individuals who are given limited resources and relocated in an isolated area. The contestants are then challenged to figure out how to survive and establish their own society.

The audience plays a role in the show as well, since the viewers are allowed to vote whether to eliminate some contestants and replace them with new ones.

The series premiered with a two-hour episode on Sept. 7 with 4.63 million viewers, and a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Although the initial rating was considered adequate for a launch, the premiere ratings for the highly publicized reality show were expected to be higher.

The show's ratings got worse for its next episodes. On its first Tuesday episode, the show lost 45% of its initial viewer base, and by its Friday episode, the number of viewers dropped below two million.

While these numbers signal that 'Utopia' is performing poorly in terms of ratings, what's worse is that the series is expected to continue to drop, due to the launch of other competition shows.

Sharing the same time slot with 'Utopia', NBC's 'Running Wild with Bear Grylls' was able to draw 3 million viewers, while ABC's 'Last Man Standing' was able to get 4.5 million viewers.

With the show's performance, it appears that Fox may be cancelling 'Utopia' sometime soon.

Some speculate that the network might keep airing the show until October, when baseball coverage begins.

Contrary to the speculation, Fox Television Group's co-CEO Dana Walden reportedly said that the executives are happy about the show, despite its soft launch. In addition to this, the executives are said to be embracing the risk, and are planning to be patient with the show.
