UFC 188 Preview: Velasquez vs. Werdum in Upcoming MMA Bout in Mexico City
Cain Velasquez has been one of the most dominant heavyweights in UFC history whenever he's healthy enough to compete. But while health has been the major chink in his otherwise indestructible armor, having fought just four times in the past three years, he's ready to throw down now and that alone makes him the favorite coming into UFC 188 in Mexico City.
He's up against a fighter that has won all five of his fights since coming back into the UFC including a interim title winning stoppage against Mark Hunt back in November.
Fabricio Werdum is as talented a heavyweight as there is in the world, but no one has shown that they can weather the one of a kind pressure Velasquez suffocates his opponents with.
That will be key coming into Saturday. If Werdum can temper the pace Velasquez comes out with and use his myriad of skills, he gives himself a chance of being the undisputed UFC Heavyweight champion. That's a massive if, and Velasquez should be expected to keep the UFC gold he's called his own once it's all said and done.
Gilbert Melendez and Eddie Alvarez promises to be an explosive matchup with the combination of bad blood and both fighters' propensity to exchange in the middle of the cage fueling what should be a dogfight from the get go.
Both men are not only technical masterful on the feet, but are always willing to throw and keep throwing. Alvarez has an advantage with his wrestling, but if Melendez can keep his distance and lure his opponent into exchanging, he might have the slight edge.
In the other main card fights, Kelvin Gastelum moves up to middleweight as he takes on UFC veteran Nate Marqardt. While weight-cutting issues have forced Gastelum to end his impressive run at welterweight, he's still a rising star in the UFC an should be favored against the up and down Marquardt.
The other fights in the main card feature Yair Rodriguez of Mexico facing Charles Rosa of the US, and a women's battle between Tecia Torres and Angela Hill.
UFC 188 is on Saturday, June 13 in Mexico City.
