UFC 187 Fight Change News: Jon Jones Stripped & Suspended, Khabib Nurmagomedov Out with Knee Injury
UFC 187 was a stacked card filled with intriguing bouts MMA fans were truly excited for. That was until this week when the UFC stripped Jon Jones of his light heavyweight title, and suspended him indefinitely, while naming Daniel Cormier as his replacement to face Anthony Johnson on May 23.
Now, another anticipated fight is out the door. Khabib Nurmagomedov suffered a knee injury during training and has been forced out of his fight with Donald Cerrone. This marks the second time Nurmagomedov has had to bow out of a fight against Cerrone due to a knee injury.
Taking his place is Canadian John Makdessi. Makdessi is a nine-fight UFC veteran, and is 13-3 in his professional MMA career. He has won four of his last five fights, and takes the fight with just over 20 days to prepare.
He takes on a red hot Cerrone, who has won his last seven fights. Coming off a controversial decision win over Benson Henderson back in UFC Fight Night 59 in January, Cerrone is now ranked third in the 155-pound division.
As noted by MMA Mania, Nurmagomedov's injury didn't sit too well with UFC president Dana White, who has been highly critical of American Kickboxing Academy's "stone age" training methods"”a method that White believes has caused a slew of injuries to its fighters, which includes UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
Nurmagomedov put in hard work to come back from knee surgery last July. He has worked his way into title contention, and had he won against Cerrone, it would have certainly put him on the shortlist of title challengers.
UFC 187 slated at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 23 now features Cormier vs. Johnson as the main event, while middleweight champion Chris Weidman takes on Vitor Belfort in the co-main event.
