Typhoon Matmo Latest News Update: Typhoon Hits Taiwan as Typhoon Rammasun Death Toll Rises

Typhoon Rammasun, the strongest super typhoon to ever hit the south end of China in a decade finally dissipates, but not before leaving behind a swath of destruction and a hefty death toll. Just when Rammasun disappears as it was entering the Chinese mainland, another storm appears and hits Taiwan.

The typhoon, Matmo, made its landfall in Taiwan Tuesday night, hitting with wind speeds of around 100mph. Rains accompanied the typhoon and 10-12 inches of rain was recorded. The path of Matmo should take it to the Chinese mainland next.

Typhoon Matmo will be the first strong typhoon to hit the Taiwanese mainland this year. In preparation for the coming storm, Taiwan officials have already evacuated around 5,400 tourists from Green Island and Orchid Island, two popular tourist spots in south-eastern Taiwan.

As for the aftermath of Rammasun, the death toll has reached 151 and may still increase over the next few days. 94 of those casualties came from the Philippines, 11 were from Vietnam, and 33 were from China. The substantial damage to property and agriculture in all three countries amounts to billions of dollars and an exact number is still yet to be deduced.

The typhoon has also caused a great number floods and landslides, which account for a majority of the casualties and property damage.

According to the Chinese Civil Affairs Ministry, 25 people are still missing after the typhoon made landfall in the southern part of China. In some parts of the country, not only in China, but in the Philippines and Vietnam as well, electricity is still out and is yet to be restored.
