Tupac Shakur Movie News: John Singleton of '2 Fast 2 Furious' and 'Boyz in the Hood' to Direct Film (VIDEO)
"2 Fast 2 Furious" and "Boyz in the Hood" Director John Singleton will in fact direct the upcoming Tupac Shakur biography film.
According to a Variety report, Singleton had previously cancelled his plans to direct the proposed film a few years ago. He will now direct, rewrite and produce the film about the iconic rapper from East Harlem, New York City, NY. Singleton's involvement in the Shakur film hits very close to home; as he and Shakur both worked together on the 1993 film titled "Poetic Justice." The Poetic Justice movie also starred R&B vocalist and former "Good Times" and "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" star Janet Jackson as Shakur's love interest.
"Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with," said Singleton in the Variety article adding. "His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation."
The movie will follow the late rapper and actor's rise to prominence and his career until his tragic passing after attending a Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 7, 1996. The film project was postponed as a result of a legal conflict between production house Morgan Creek and Shakur's mother Afeni; a later settlement allowed her the right to executive produce.
Singleton expects to begin production in four months.
