'Toy Story 4' Release Date, Latest News: Disney Announces Fourth Installment Hits Theaters in 2017

Disney has announced that 'Toy Story 4' will be back on June 16, 2017 along with all the favorite characters of the film, including Rex, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Hamm, Slinky Dog, and others.

Announcing this recently, director of the original 'Toy Story' and 'Toy Story 2', John Lasseter, who will also be directing the fourth installment, said that they loved these characters very much and they were like family to them.

Incidentally, 'Toy Story 4' comes seven years after 2010's 'Toy Story 3', which itself came 11 years after 'Toy Story 2'.

Despite the huge time gap, 'Toy Story 3' succeeded in grossing over 1 billion dollars at the box office worldwide.

A report by the Los Angles Times quotes Lasseter saying that the fourth installment of the film has been inspired by passion and not business.

He is quoted as saying, "A lot of people in the industry view us doing sequels as being for the business of it, but for us it's pure passion." The director added, "We only make sequels when we have a story that's as good as or better than the original."

As the previous three movies have been massive hits and critically acclaimed, it will be a big challenge for the filmmakers to produce something that will match up to the earlier 'Toy Story' films, especially 'Toy Story 3'.

'Toy Story' fans can still remember that 'Toy Story 3' had a heartbreaking conclusion, as the characters had to say goodbye to their owner, Andy.

As Andy grew up to be a young man, he passed on the toys to a little girl called Bonnie. This gave the impression that the franchise had a great ending to a great story.

According to reports, 'Toy Story 4' will start from where the third movie left off. However, while the plot will continue from the previous film, and the forthcoming installment will be a love story.

In terms of business, the original 'Toy Story' movie released in 1995 and earned a nearly $362 million globally; 1999's 'Toy Story 2' garnered over $485 million; and 'Toy Story 3' from 2010 grossed more than $1.063 billion. Together, the three films have garnered revenue of $1.9 billion.

This might be why Lasseter said, "We don't just, because of the success of a film, automatically say we're going to do a sequel and then figure out what we're going to do."
