‘Top Gun 2’ Release Date, News: Jerry Bruckheimer Teases Possible Movie Plot with Star Tom Cruise

The sequel to the famed 1986 'Top Gun' film is still a farfetched dream for its fans and producers, but the possibility of it is quickly becoming a reality. According to Jerry Bruckheimer, a 'Top Gun' producer and director, Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures are already engaged in coming up with a new movie.

Cruise, who played Navy pilot Pete Mitchell, aka Maverick, is currently focusing on 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol' which is due for release on Christmas of 2015. However, the actor remains highly enthusiastic about reliving the 30-year-old saga of 'Top Gun'.

"Jerry [Bruckheimer] and I, we're working on it. If we can figure it out, it'll be a lot of fun. I'd like to get back in those jets if we could figure the story out," the 52-year-old actor told Access Hollywood.

Meanwhile, Bruckheimer revealed that Tony Scott and scriptwriter Peter Craig were already in the works of completing the storyline before 'The Good Wife' director's untimely death in 2012, "It's been in the works for 35 years! We really want to make it, Tom is engaged and so is Paramount, so we hope we can bring it to an audience shortly," Bruckheimer told Digital Spy.

Huffington Post similarly quoted the renowned filmmaker behind the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'National Treasure' among others saying, "Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it."

According to Bruckheimer, the concept for 'Top Gun 2' is about the proliferation of drones in replacement of human pilots. However, he added, that the twist of the story comes in when Cruise proves that man is not necessarily obsolete.

The original 'Top Gun' earned more than US $356 million and helped Cruise make is big break in Hollywood.
