‘Top Gun 2’ Release Date: Jerry Bruckheimer Says Movie Will Hit Big Screen Before 'Mission Impossible 5' Premiere Date

After nearly three decades since 'Top Gun' hit the big screen, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that 'Top Gun 2' is now in the works.

Initially, the production of the sequel began in 2012, but was short lived as its director, Tony Scott, had passed away. He had the best idea, out of anyone on board, about what direction the film should be taken in to guarantee a success.

"We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer," Bruckheimer said, "Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it."

Bruckheimer said Scott were able to share his plans for the movie before his death.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," Bruckheimer said, "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture."

Bruckheimer shared that it took almost 30 years for the movie to finally be made because for some time, Cruise and the production studio couldn't sync up their schedules

Kelly McGillis, who was an original character on the first 'Top Gun' movie, is said to be reprising her role as instructor Charlie Blackwood.

"For me it's kind of like starting over. It's slow, but it's really good," McGillis said, "I don't feel compelled to be the same Kelly McGillis that I was in the Eighties. I've aged. I've grown. I have the opportunity to reintroduce myself as a character actress."

The first film which was released in 1986 raked in over $356 million worldwide and had turned Cruise into one of Hollywood's most sought-after stars.

While there is no official date set for 'Top Gun 2', Bruckheimer has said that it will be shown sooner than Cruise's upcoming 'Mission Impossible 5'.
