Tomb Raider Definitive Edition Sales Help Push Franchise Toward 6 Million Units Sold (VIDEO)

The remake of Tomb Raider is expected to sell over six million copies, which would make it the best selling title in the series.

"By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013 Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance," wrote Square Enix head of studios Darrell Gallagher.

Initially the studio was afraid the game would miss the mark in sales projections but with the re-release of the game for next-gen consoles with The Definitive Edition, sales continued to steadily rise.

"At launch we set franchise records for the fastest selling day one and month one in Tomb Raider history," Gallagher wrote. "With the positive word of mouth and continued commercial momentum it's great to see Tomb Raider (2013) on course to become the best-selling game in the history of the franchise! This would be a crowning achievement for the teams around the world, and one that we have our sights firmly set on!"

The Definitive Edition is not a part two of the regular edition, it is simply an HD version. However, some gamers were upset when there was no upgrade program in place, meaning if the game was already purchased for the PS3 or Xbox 360, it would not be discounted for the PS4 or Xbox One is purchased again.

"Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is not participating in an upgrade program. The game will retail for $59.99 in North America. Check with your local retailer for price points across Europe," read an FAQ on the Tomb Raider site.

In addition to this, Square Enix also said old save files of the previous game will not be compatible with the new game, so all achievements, unlockables, and bonus content will have to start from scratch if a gamer decides to go next-gen. However, according to Polygon, the Definitive Edition features new content as well as a redesigned Lara Croft, native 1080p resolution, and support from Vita Remote Play and the Kinect.

The game arrived on Jan. 28 in North America and Jan. 31 in Europe according to its announcement at VGX 2013. The original version of the game was released on March 5 of 2013 for the Xbox 360, PS3, MAC, and PC.
