Exclusive First Look: Tom Hanks brings Walt Disney to life Christmas 2013 in "Saving Mr Banks"
A new movie from Disney, entitled "Saving Mr. Banks", tells the story of the unique friendship between the author of Mary Poppins, P. L. Travers, and Walt Disney, himself. Disney comes to life through academy award winner Tom Hanks and Travers is played by Brit favorite, Emma Thompson.
Although Disney has been portrayed before in film before in a made-for-TV film "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes: The Annette Funicello Story" and as a secondary character in the feature film 'RKO 281', this will be Disney's first portrayal as a main character in a full-length film. Given the historic momentum of the portrayal and Hank's knack for acting, the film is sure-fire Oscar base, predictably snagging a nomination for best supporting role.
Travers is flown to Los Angeles after the invitation from Disney to comes to turn her book into a movie. The stiff-necked Travers is weary of her beloved story becoming another one of Disney's childish tales, and tries to preserve its integrity with all of her might, refusing 'silly' songs for the arrangements and being a thorough grouch, in general.
"There's a tendency to cast aside a children's author or children's film and make it seem less important than those for an adult audience. Of course, I think it's the other way around," says Thompson. "You can get away with dropping the ball from time to time with adult audiences but children know. You've really got to do your best. Letting them down is a serious failure in your artistic integrity."
Walt Disney takes Travers on her first tour of Disney Land, and through his persistent cheer and goodwill, he begins to crack her hard surface, revealing that the story of Marry Poppins is indeed based on a true story, of Travers' childhood.
The film is set to debut in the middle of the Holiday season, on December 20, 2013.
