Tim Tebow was an 'Obvious Mistake' Former NY Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum Said
Former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum has been out of the NFL for two years, and to this day regrets acquiring Tim Tebow form the Denver Broncos and blames the acquisition for his failure.
Tannenbaum worked for the New York Jets for over 15 years (1997 to 2012) in multiple roles including general manager. He was first the negotiator for the team's player deals. Afterward, he was the Senior VP of Football Operations. Finally in 2006, he became the general manager, succeeding Terry Bradway.
The Jets went to two consecutive AFC Championship games under Head Coach Rex Ryan and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum's tenure in 2009 and 2010. The Jets lost their last three games in 2011, finishing 8-8 and missing the playoffs. As a result, he was fired after an unsatisfactory 2012 season in which the Jets lost their last three games of the season (in 2 consecutive years) and ended the season with a 6-10 record. Reflecting on his Jets GM reign, there are several decisions Tannenbaum would have done otherwise.
"I think some of the mistakes made were from the bottom end of our roster up," said Tannenbaum yesterday on CBS Sports Radio's Damon Amendolara Show. "So when you lose guys like Jim Leonhard or Danny Woodhead or Jerricho Cotchery, it affects a lot of things - not just what they do on the field, but what they do in the locker room."
"Obviously we made a couple mistakes - trading for Tim Tebow most notably. But I would say beyond that, but we (could have done a better job with the bottom of our roster), especially toward the end," said Tannenbaum to CBS Sports Radio on January 15.
Tebow rarely played for the Jets as Mark Sanchez's backup QB in 2012. As a result, on April 29 2013, the Jets released Tebow after drafting rookie quarterback Geno Smith in the NFL Draft last year.
In conclusion, the former Denver Broncos and New York Jets athlete was cut by the New England Patriots during the 2013 NFL preseason and did not find a new squad during the regular season.
