Tim Tebow News: Tebow Allegedly Violated NCAA Rules on Call With Ohio State's Clifton Garrett
Tim Tebow allegedly violated NCAA rules during a call with an Ohio State recruit.
Tebow's brief discussion with Illinois high school linebacker Clifton Garrett forced the Buckeyes to report a secondary NCAA violation.
NCAA rules prevents ex-college football players, among others, from having interaction with recruits on behalf of a college.
Garrett called Ohio State coach Urban Meyer while he was with Tebow, according to Cleveland.com.
The website stated Ohio State reported the following to the NCAA:
Upon receiving the call, Coach Meyer told Garrett that he was on vacation and having lunch with friends and family, including Tim Tebow. Garrett questioned Coach Meyer if he could wish Tebow good luck on the forthcoming season. Coach Meyer handed the phone to Tebow and Garrett conversed with Tebow for nearly eight seconds. Coach Meyer stated that no recruiting conversation happened, there was no intent to have Tebow recruit on behalf of Ohio State and he, in fact, did not recruit on behalf of Ohio State.
Coach Meyer stated that Garrett was not told to call by anyone from the Ohio State football staff and that neither he nor Tebow had any other discussion with any other prospects during the lunch. Coach Meyer further specified that Tebow has never spoken with any other potential Ohio State student-athletes.
Coach Meyer comprehends that the discussion between Garrett and Tebow was an error on his part. Nevertheless, he was unwavering that it was a reflexive, polite act rather than an deliberate attempt to involve Tim Tebow in the recruiting process.
Garrett was fascinated by the exchange with Tebow on March 9, 2013, posting on his Twitter account:
"I just called Coach Meyer just ta see whats up and next thing you know I was talking on the phone to TIM TEBOW!!! #InShockRightNow #Insane!" wrote Garnett via Twitter in reference to Tebow.
Tebow previously played for Meyer when he was the head coach at the University of Florida, eventually did not have much of an impact on Garrett. Garrett signed with LSU on National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
