‘Theory of Everything’ Review, Ratings: Critics Give Rave Reviews Over Hawking Biopic
Universal Pictures' Stephen Hawking biopic 'Theory of Everything' has been called "exceptional" and a movie that proved the power of human ideas and emotions, The Los Angeles Times reported.
'Theory of Everything' tells the story of Stephen Hawking, his ground-breaking work in the field of theoretical physics, his theories on the origins of the universe, his struggles with a debilitating neuromuscular disease and his love story with his first wife Jane.
Calling it a "rich and thrilling story," film critic Betsy Sharkey expressed compliments for the film. She felt it was "a paean to the power of ideas and emotions." She also called the performances by Eddie Redmayne as Stephen and Felicity Jones as Jane as "indelible."
"It is the way in which the actors and filmmakers translate the abstract, the heart and mind of the matter that makes 'The Theory of Everything' exceptional," the critic concluded.
Other film critics also gave their two cents about the film.
Brandy McDonell from News OK gave the film three and a half stars out of four and complimented Redmayne and Jones in her review.
"Eddie Redmayne seems a lock for a best actor nomination for his nuanced portrayal of brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking," she wrote, "Felicity Jones also gives a subtly powerful turn as Hawking's first wife, Jane."
Sandy Schaefer, on the other hand, gave it four out of five stars in her review for Screen Rant. She calls the film "well-acted," "moving" and "insightful."
Jason Friedman from the Santa Barbara Independent called the film "smart and heartfelt," and complimented director James Marsh for his "singular vision and attention to detail."
Friedman also focuses on Jones, calling her the reason the film sets itself apart from other films, calling her performance "powerful" and impressive.
'Theory of Everything' is set to open the Dubai Film Festival on Dec. 10, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The biopic will kick off the eight-day event, while 'Into the Woods' will be closing it on Dec. 17. Guests confirmed for the event include Paul Bettany, Kelsey Grammer, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Olga Kurylenko.
