'The Voice' on NBC: Usher and Shakira Bring Ratings and Swagger [VIDEO]
Season 4 of The Voice premiered Monday night at 8/7c on NBC. Out with the old in with the new is this season's motto. Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green got the boot to make room for a new batch of one-name judges, Shakira and Usher, who joined Voice vets Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
Season 4 of The Voice kicked off with an awesome rendition of Abbey Road classic "Come Together" performed by the four judges. The chemistry was electrifying.
If you're new to "reality-music" shows you might ask yourself what makes The Voice any better than American Idol. It's the judges...and those awesome red chairs of course. In all seriousness, The Voice does have an intriguing format.
Episode 1 featured the first of the blind auditions. Instead of shows like American Idol where the judges give feedback after "watching" a performance, The Voice forces Shakira, Usher, Levine and Shelton to pick their singing teams based purely on voices, only allowing them to turn around after they've made their choices.
Episode 1 of The Voice Season 4 featured songs performed by Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, LMFAO and Michael Jackson.
I didn't hear any groundbreaking performances last night but one thing is for sure. The new judges aren't playing around. Usher is by far the most popular pick for most of the contestants.
Blake Shelton will continue to successfully recruit the country contestants and Shakira will easily garner the Latino vote, but Usher has a 'wildcard.' His blend of classic and modern should be seen as a threat to the other 3 judges.
Good luck Mr. Maroon 5!
