The Voice News, Cast Rumors: Christina Aguilera Returning as Judge in Season 8, Replaces Gwen Stefani

'The Voice' host Carson Daly announced on 'The Today Show', Tuesday, that Christina Aguilera will join the line-up of coaches for season eight.

The current season is still underway, with mainstay coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, and new additions Gwen Stefani and Pharell Williams.

Aguilera will be replacing Stefani, while Williams will has signed on to remain a coach for the next season.

Besides Stefani, who made her debut this season, Shakira also became the female coach in seasons four and six.

Aguilera did not participate in the show for three seasons because of tour schedule conflicts and the arrival of her baby, Summer Rain, with fiancé Matt Ruttler in August.

'The Voice' is the American adaptation of 'The Voice of Holland', a reality T.V. singing competition. It first aired on April 26, 2011 and is on its seventh season, currently in the battle round stages.

Aspiring musicians from all over the country are given less than two minutes to impress the panel of four coaches, who don't see the faces of the contestants.

If they wish the contestant to join their team, they press a button, making their chairs turn around, letting the coach see the singer for the first time.

The coaches then mentors their team of 12 contestants as they go through "battles" against other participants, and live performances.

Each coach has advisers to help them during the practice sessions, including groups and individual artists. Ed Sheeran, Mary J. Blige, Little Big Town and Ne-Yo are among the musicians tapped as advisers.

To date, three of the show's winners have come from Shelton's team, while the first season saw Levine's artist getting the top spot. The other winner was mentored by Usher, who was in seasons four and six.

'The Voice' airs Mondays and Tuesdays, 8/7 Central on NBC.
