'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 Cast News: Nina Dobrev Comes Back For Season 8, But Only In Episode 16

It has just been confirmed that "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will see the return of Nina Dobrev, but that's a double-edged sword.

Ever since the actress left the series, the show has suffered from poor ratings. As a result, The CW network has announced that it won't be renewed for another season after season 8. The announcement has disappointed fans and made them wonder if Dobrev will at all return to the supernatural series for the upcoming season.

While Dobrev left the show after season 6, her presence was felt in the season 7 finale, when Damon shockingly heard Elena's voice in a vault, calling his name for help. The episode hinted the possibility of Dobrev's return next season, but everything remained a rumor until Dobrev's official IMDB page confirmed recently that she is going to make an appearance in season 8. Unfortunately for fans, she will only reprise her role in episode 16.

At the recently held San Diego Comic-Con, "The Vampire Diaries" showrunner Julie Plec also expressed her high hopes for Dobrev's comeback.

"Not to put too much pressure on anything Nina Dobrev, but a promise was made. An emotional promise that I'd like to see come to life," she said.

Meanwhile, rumors have been going around that Ian Somerhalder, Dobrev's co-star and ex-boyfriend, will not be happy to see the actress back in the show, as it would mean problems in his married life.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 premiere is scheduled to air Oct. 21, 8:00 p.m. on The CW.
