Along with a rumored villain, the are talks revealing that Ryan Hardy is set to take on a vigilante role in "The Following" season 4. Also, some rumors suggest that the fourth season is not going to happen.

Hardy is set to be a vigilante should Fox renew "The Following" for a fourth season, according to Spoilers Guide. As per the publication, showrunner Alexi Hawley teased that it had been Hardy answering the question he had been asking for the first three seasons, which were about having a life and becoming happy outside his obsessions. According to Hawley, the answer to those queries was "No;" but it had felt that viewers had really needed to answer it.

Aside from seeing Hardy on a vigilante role, "The Following" season 4 is also set to see an "uber-rich" serial killer, according to TV Line. In her interview with the publication, series co-showrunner Alexi Hawley said that the series writers talked about the concept of having an extremely rich serial killer to break away from the identity of the murderer.

According to Hawley, the idea that the uber-rich, barring the alleged murderer and "Jinx" subject Robert Durst, were not identified and captured as serial killers. As per the showrunner, that could not possibly genetically been that they did not get the gene, adding that they did not have such proclivities.

Hawley also teased that the villain of "The Following" season 4 could have possibly dealt with a richer and more domineering murderer than Joe, Strauss (Gregg Henry), and Theo (Michael Ealy).

According to Master Herald, "The Following" season 3 saw a decline in the number of viewers, so the renewal for a fourth season is going to be a question. As per the publication, ratings and basic critical response from the audience will factor in on whether the show is set to be renewed for a season 4 or not.
