'The Crown' Cast News: Matt Smith of 'Doctor Who' Cast to Play Prince Philip in Royal Drama on Netflix

Matt Smith, the former star of Doctor Who, is confirmed to play a young Prince Philip in the new Netflix original series, The Crown.

The actor has been cast as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh alongside actor Claire Foy, who will be portraying Queen Elizabeth II.

Also starring in the upcoming drama, will be John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

The Crown is inspired by the stage play The Audience.

The show follows Queen Elizabeth II and her relationship with various prime ministers of the United Kingdom after the end of World War II.

Netflix describes the show as the "story of two of the most famous addresses in the world -- Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street -- and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century."

Each season of the show will focus on a different era of the Queen's reign.

The events of the show are told by those people who are still alive and witnessed these events in real life.

The drama is reportedly costing $100 million to produce. It is Netflix's first drama commissioned from the United Kingdom.

The first season of the show, which will consist of 10 episodes will be coming to Netflix sometime in 2016.

Netflix has received a lot of praise so far for its programming, and continues to move forward with even more and bigger productions.

Claire Foy is known for playing Henry VIII's wife, Anne Boleyn, in the BBC's adaptation of Wolf Hall, and John Lithgow is known for his role in Dexter.
