The Civil Wars Announce Break Up; Joy Williams Returns to Solo Career and is Working on New Album

The Civil Wars have officially called it quits and one half of the duo, Joy Williams, has announced she will return to a solo career.

The band, which also consists of Jon Paul White, has been on an indefinite hiatus since the end of 2012. "I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least," Williams said on the group's site, "JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together. ... I'm so thankful and my heart is full."

She continued, "Looking ahead, I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I've loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon."

Before Williams was winning Grammy Awards with the Civil Wars, she was a CCM artist who recorded three albums. From 2001-2005 she was signed to a Christian label as a young 17-year-old pop artist. The albums were moderately successful, and her song "Hide" won an ASCAP Award in 2005 for "Most Performed Song." She was later dropped from her label and went the secular route with music.

She completely changed music genres, and with White, performed indie folk music that garnered huge success. Together they created two albums and four EPs, and won and were nominated for multiple awards.

"I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars--from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one," posted White.

The band released a track for free as thanks to the fans for all the support over the years. Their version of "You Are My Sunshine" that was recorded in 2010 and released in 2011 can be downloaded at TheCivilWars.com.
