'The Bible' Miniseries on History Channel Inspires 'Noah' Movie, Starring Russell Crowe
The Bible miniseries, History Channel's faith-based ratings juggernaut came to an end, airing its final episode Easter Sunday night. It brought in almost 13 million viewers the first night and consistently garnered 10 million viewers each episode. It even regularly beat AMC's top-rated Sunday night series The Walking Dead.
For a long time Hollywood didn't think about Christian audiences as a serious demographic. That changed after the commercial success of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. The 2004 film covers, in detail, the tragic last days of Jesus' life. After making $370 million in box-office revenue Hollywood realized there are millions of Americans who take their faith very seriously.
Now with the success of The Bible miniseries networks are jumping on the bandwagon with religion-themed shows of their own. The American Bible Challenge just added gospel hit-maker Kirk Franklin to the team. Bible Challenge is GSN's most popular show in the network's 17-year history.
The reality show Preacher's Daughters currently airs on Lifetime.
Showtime is currently working on a series called The Vatican.
Director Darren Aronofsky is working on the movie Noah featuring Russell Crowe. Noah is scheduled for a 2014 release.
With not network affiliation at the moment, a 6-hour, $20 million miniseries called "Jesus of Nazareth" is currently in production.
It seems like Hollywood is finally ready to take bigger chances when it comes to faith-based programming. Ever since The Passion of the Christ, Hollywood knows there is an audience seeking spiritualism from their TV/Film.
