'The Bible' Miniseries on History Channel Inspires New 'Jesus of Nazareth' Miniseries
After The Bible, History Channel's new series from Mark Burnett and wife Roma Downey, posted incredible ratings, others are now trying to capitalize on the faith-based success. A new six-hour, $20 million miniseries based on "Jesus of Nazareth" is waiting for a network agreement to be finalized.
We believe the audience continues to have a hunger for life- and faith-affirming films," said Michael Landon Jr., who is writing and producing the 'Jesus of Nazareth' series with Brian Bird for Brad Krevoy's MPCA, The Hollywood Reporter says. "The monumental success of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's The Bible just underscores that."
Showtime is also jumping on The Bible bandwagon. The premium movie/TV channel is currently developing, The Vatican, which obviously focuses on the drama behind the history of the Catholic capital of the world. It will be interesting to see if Showtime, a non-cable network, provides the same politically correct approach as History Channel did on cable TV.
Shows like Lifetime's reality show Preacher's Daughters and GSN's The American Bible Challenge [which just added Kirk Franklin as co-host and musical director] were released right on time to cash in on spiritual fever. Lifetime network also broadcasts encore presentations of The Bible throughout the week.
Though Jesus of Nazareth is still waiting for a network like History Channel to sign on to the show, Krevoy of MPCA is confident it's only a matter of time before they reach an agreement.
"I'm very comfortable we're going to get plenty of takers," Krevoy told The Hollywood Reporter.
Tune in Easter Sunday for The Bible finale at 8/7c on History Channel.
