'The Bible' Mini-Series on History Channel: Episode 4 Recap (Part One)

Episode 4 of The Bible, History Channel's ratings juggernautaired Sunday night at 8/7c. This week's episode, "Mission" featured the rise and arrest of Jesus. Despite Jewish religious officials (Pharisees) and the Roman government, Jesus has been gaining popularity in Judea. Jesus travels from city to city performing miracles, winning over followers everywhere he goes.

At the end of episode 3 of The Bible Jesus had just recruited Peter, his "rock." In the first half of episode 4, Jesus performs several healing miracles. In a small town Jesus heals a paralyzed man. On his way through town, Jesus also heals a leper everyone no one else in town would even give the time of day.

Episode 4, "Mission" also focuses on the evil nature of tax collectors, who were in that time notorious for corruption, taking advantage of their own people. Jesus meets Matthew, who was a tax collector before becoming one of Jesus' disciples.

The first half of episode 4 of The Bible wraps with the iconic Jesus walking on water scene. The disciples who are stranded at sea during a terrible storm start to question Jesus as the messiah. As the storm rages to a peak they see an apparition on top of the water. They realize its Jesus, who asks Peter to walk to him. At first Peter can stand on the water. Always the doubtful one, Peter's faith wavers and he plunges into the water.

Part one of The Bible episode 4 wraps up with a heart-wrenching resurrection scene. Jesus failed to return in time for his friend Lazarus's death. Jesus asks to enter the tomb. Jesus enters the tomb that reeks of death and breathes life back into his old friend. The crowd outside falls to their knees, for they now were certain they were in the presence of God.
