Texas Man May Fight to Pull the Plug On Pregnant Wife's Life Support
A man in Texas has indicated that he wants to pull the plug on his pregnant wife's life support after she became effectively brain dead while 18 weeks pregnant.
The man has said that his wife wouldn't want to be kept in her current state, and has asked that she be let go by her life support machine being turned off. However, Texas state regulation is preventing the abortion of the 18 week old unborn baby.
Marlise Munoz became brain dead when she collapsed from a suspected pulmonary embolism on November 26. Her paramedic husband Erick gave her CPR before an ambulance arrived after he discovered her on the living room floor.
"They don't know how long the baby was without nutrients and oxygen," said Munoz. "But I'm aware what challenges I might face ahead."
According to Eric, Marlise would not have wanted to be kept alive by machines before she was very sick. "It's hard to reach the point where you wish your wife's body would stop," said Munoz to WFAA-TV, Dallas.
Even though Munoz has said that he feels it would be the right choice to terminate his wife's life support, under Texas law: "A person may not withdraw or withhold life-sustaining treatment under this subchapter from a pregnant patient."
According to ABC News, Eric Munoz would have to receive an injunction or restraining order from a judge in order to precede with his decision to end Marlise's life support.
