Taylor Swift ‘1989’ New Album Sales Figures: Reaches Platinum Status, Sells Over One Milllion Units Within First Week

Veering from her usual country-style songs, Taylor Swift gambled on recording a pop album, but that has apparently paid off as it has sold over one million copies in its first week of release, reaching its platinum status.

The album, entitled 1989, is beating records worldwide as it is said to have an increasing number of sales unlike any other album in a long time.

These kinds of weekly sales have not been seen since 2002, when Eminem released his album The Eminem Show, which sold more than 1.3 million in a week.

1989 is Swift's fifth album, but the first one to showcase pop songs. It is now tagged as the "best-selling album to be released this year."

So far this year, no other albums have sold over one million copies. The only album to have more than one million sales recently was the soundtrack album of 'Frozen', which was released in 2013.

For 2014, Coldplay's Ghost Stories album is a far second from Swift's album when it comes to sales, selling only about 800,000 units since it was released, according to Forbes.

In a statement released to NPR by music writer Bill Werde, who was the former editor of the Billboard Magazine, Swift is "defying retail gravity at this point."

Because of the ever-growing popularity of digital downloads, sales of physical albums have been declining for years, according to NPR, which is why the website said 1989's staggering sales can be considered a "miracle."

Despite being in the midst of several boy-controversies in the past years, Swift is proving that she is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry, being the only female artist to have three consecutive albums to sell more than one million copies within a week.

Her 2012 album Red sold more than 1.2 million units in a week, while her 2008 album Speak Now, sold over one million copies.
