'Star Trek 3' Release Date, Production News: Joe Cornish Replaces Director JJ Abrams

Official word has just broke about a release date for 'Star Trek 3', pegging it with a debut in 2016. The upcoming film will premiere just in time for the 50th anniversary of the original television series that it's based on,

The original 'Star Trek' series (1966) was created for television by Gene Roddenberry, and has since been adapted to the big screen many times, including the recent blockbuster films.

For the third installment in the new 'Star Trek' film franchise, Joe Cornish, of 'Attack the Block' fame, will step up as director in place of J.J Abrams.

While some fresh elements are expected due to a new man in command, fans are hoping that Cornish will retain many the traditional 'Star Trek' themes that viewers have grown to love over the years.

According to reports the new installment will again be written by Roberto Orci, but his co-writer on the previous two installments, Alex Kurtzman will not be returning. Orci will be joined by Patrick McKay and J.D Payne, who are reported be 'Star Trek' fans as well. Many think that it's important for the people working on the show to enjoy the 'Star Trek' franchise themselves, as it brings a level of authenticity to the table.

Orci told Variety in an interview, "Well, I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch. The studio has yet to even read the script. I'm in the middle of writing it, with the talented team of [John D.] Payne and [Patrick] McKay. They are true Star Trek fans, as well. So, I can't even think anything about the future until I give them a script and they greenlight it. Until that happens, everything else is just a rumor."
