'Star Trek 3' Release Date, Plot News: Kirk's Five Year Mission Into Deep Space
Paramount Pictures has recently announced that the highly anticipated 'Star Trek 3' film is set to be released before the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's classic TV franchise, 'Star Trek'. While there is no exact launch date as of yet, reports claim that the film should be ready by Fall, 2016.
Director J.J Abrams mentioned a 2016 release when speaking with Digital Spy, "We're definitely talking about the next one, but we haven't talked about a release date. We don't want to wait four years, the same amount of time between the last one and this one, but [2016] is going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully," he said.
Many speculate that the third installment in the series will pick up where the previous film left off, however, that is not the case as Abrams clarified to Digital Spy, "We like the idea of keeping secrets not for any other reason than to keep the experience of going to the movies and not having seen anything before it....You want this to be a movie that anybody can get into. It's not really a sequel, it's its own thing," Abrams said.
Fans are anticipating this film especially because of certain rumors that surround its storyline. Many believe that 'Star Trek 3' will take Kirk and his crew into deep space, unlike the previous films which have Earth-centric plots. This means that 'Star Trek' fans will have a chance to see aliens and creatures that they've never seen before.
Director Roberto Orci mentioned to Trek Movie, that Kirk and his crew are looking at a five-year mission, "So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space," Orci said.
