'Spider-Man' New Reboot Actor Rumors: Marvel & Sony Differ on Who's Taking the Role?
Fans of 'Spider-Man' have been eagerly waiting to learn the name of the actor who would be portraying Peter Parker again on the silver screen after Marvel and Sony announced that they have agreed to bring back the superhero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ironically, now the selection of the actor to portray Spidey is reported to have triggered tension between these two companies.
According to IB Times, recently The Wrap's Jeff Sneider, who appeared on the Making Movies podcast to reveal some news regarding the casting race, disclosed that suddenly Asa Butterfield, who has been a front-runner for a long time now, is not being considered for the role anymore. Sneider claimed his sources told him that the new actors in race for the role include Charlie Plummer, Tom Holland and Matthew Lintz.
According to reports, though all the three names are still in contention, Marvel seems to be is favoring Plummer, while Sony prefers Holland. If these rumors are to be believed, it means that the bold partnership between Marvel and Sony has already had a tumultous start. This assumption gains ground from the fact that apparently the two companies are unable to cross the first hurdle - deciding on the casting.
According to IGN, Sony is paying the total expenses for the standalone movie slated for 2017 release.
This, however, could be a moot point, according to Birth. Movies. Death. (formerly Badass Digest). The website reported that actually the casting race has now narrowed down to two actors - Holland and Charlie Rowe. It further stated that Rowe, a former child actor, who appeared in 'The Golden Compass,' is in a tie with Holland.
The IB Times report states that it would be necessary for both Marvel as well as Sony to set the situation right soon. If rumors are to be believed, the two companies are expecting to introduce the new Peter Parker in 'Captain America: Civil War,' which is currently being filmed and will be released in 2016. With this upcoming flick already including more superheroes compared to any standard 'Avengers' movie, it is expected that even if Spider-Man is introduced he will not have a major role.
Meanwhile, both Marvel and Sony and Marvel are said to be cautious to leave out the too familiar origin story of the Spider-Man character and depend heavily on the fact that he may eventually appear with other characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to boost fans' interest. Previous reports hinted that the sixth Spider-Man movie since 2002 will see the superhero teaming up with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), since the latter character tests Spidey with the hopes of making him a complete Avenger.
