‘South Park’ Season 18 Spoilers: Premiere Tackles Washington Redskins Controversy, Promo Video Released
Comedy Central's long-running animated satirical series, 'South Park', is on its way towards an 18th season premiere, and a teaser for the first episode has just been released. The producers have revealed a promo video that tackles the recent controversy about the Washington Redskins.
The one minute preview for the premiere episode entitled "Go Fund Yourself!" features Eric Cartman with the animated versions of Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, head coach Jay Gruden, and quarterback Robert Griffin III.
In the video, Snyder, Gruden, and Griffin confront Cartman for using Washington Redskins' name and logo for his unidentified business.
"Don't you see that when you refer to your company as the Washington Redskins it's offensive to us? It's derogatory, Mr. Cartman," says Snyder.
Cartman then explains that he used the team's name and logo to show respect.
"When I named my company 'Washington Redskins', it was done out of deep appreciation for your team and your people," Cartman says.
The storyline of the episode promo is in reference to the name controversy that the Washington Redskins encountered recently. The said team was criticized for having a name that is offensive towards Native American people.
The team even encountered several anti-Redskins movements, including senators signing a petition for a name change, and an anti-Redskins ad during the NBA finals.
This is not the first time that 'South Park' has tackled a controversy within their episodes. In 2010, an episode, which caused the series to be banned in Sri Lanka, featured an issue about the depiction of Muhammad.
Meanwhile, 'South Park' was recently picked up by Hulu for exclusive streaming rights.
Upon the release of the Season 18, all episodes from the previous 17 seasons will be available for streaming on Hulu.
The 18th season of 'South Park' premieres on Sept. 24 on Comedy Central.
