'Son of Sam' Murderer Skips Parole Stating, 'Jesus Has Already Freed My Heart, Soul and Mind' (VIDEO)
Serial Killer David Berkowitz was a no show for his parole hearing this week, claiming he already has found freedom in Christ, and now he will sit in prison for two more years.
Berkowitz who turns 61 next month, was denied parole by a two-person panel Tuesday at Sullivan Correctional Facility in upstate Fallsburg. He skipped out of his hearing, which was his seventh since he became eligible for parole in 2002.
The panel reprimanded Berkowitz for not showing up. "Your decision to waive this parole board hearing did not afford this panel the opportunity to discuss your case," they said according to The New York Post.
Berkowitz' lawyer, Mark J. Heller, told Page Six that during his incarceration, Berkowitz became a born-again Jew for Jesus. A fact that has been made well known by several interviews the convicted felon has made on national TV in recent years.
Watch below:
Heller said, "David told me that the reason he has never sought freedom from the parole board by attending parole hearings is because 'Jesus has already freed my heart, soul and mind and has forgiven me.'"‰"
The lawyer went on to tell Page Six that Berkowitz was raised in the Jewish faith. He found Jesus behind bars, and joined Jews for Jesus, an evangelical organization. He now serves as a minister's assistant at the Sullivan County prison.
Berkowitz fatally shot six young people and maimed seven others in an infamous 1976-77 rampage that terrorized New York City. Using a .44 caliber revolver, he targeted couples sitting in cars in The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. He also wrote letters taunting police and detailing his murders while naming himself the "Son of Sam," and later claiming his neighbor's dog, Sam, had told him to carry out the shootings.
The former postal worker pleaded guilty and was sentenced in June 1978 to life in prison with the possibility of parole. During his incarceration, Berkowitz claimed that he was part of a satanic cult and the killings were encouraged by the cult. He also said cult members assisted him in the shootings but one else has ever been charged.
Berkowitz's next parole hearing is scheduled for 2016.
