'Sherlock' Season 4 Release Date, Spoilers: Cast Rumors Suggest More Female Roles Are Coming

Our favorite detective companion combo finished their third season in February, but it looks like they've already planned to come back with a vengeance for a fourth season.

During an event planned by the Royal Television Society, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss commented on several things viewers might find interesting about the coming season that is already in production.

In addition to touting a Christmas 2014 release date, the co-creators of the show revealed that Moriarty would be featuring in new episodes and that there could be new female faces on the show.

Season 2 ended with the supposed deaths of Sherlock and Moriarty. Season 3 began with the revelation that Sherlock had faked his own death, and ended with a new possibility: could Moriarty have survived "The Reichenbach Fall" as well?

Based on what Moffat and Gattis the answer is an emphatic yes. Apparently this plan was has been all but cemented for a while now. What will Moriary's new villainy entail? And how can Sherlock be prepared to avoid another Reichenbach situation?

Another teaser that was related by the two creators was that there would be an increased place for female roles on the show. This increase could include both new female roles and an increased presence of series regulars Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs).

As for the release date rumored by the co-creators of "Sherlock," Christmas 2014 was given increased credibility by the BBC controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson, who was also present at the event. It looks like fans may experience a shortening of the troublesome time gap that many have found vexing in between previous seasons of the show.
