Sergio Garcia Racist Comments About Tiger Woods: Issues Apology After "Fried Chicken" Comments
It's no secret Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia don't really like one another. But the feud escalated after Sergio Garcia recently made a racist comment about Woods to a reporter at the European Tour players dinner Tuesday night.
At the dinner Garcia was sarcastically asked if he would have Tiger over for dinner during the U.S. Open.
Sergio replied, "We'll have him 'round every night. We will serve fried chicken."
Why fried chicken continues to divide the people on this planet is beyond me. Fried chicken should be delicious enough to unite us. Unfortunately the joke was intended as a racial stereotype reference associated with African-Americans.
Later Tuesday night Garcia release a statement apologizing for the racist comments and delivered a formal apology to the media Wednesday at the BMW PGA Championship.
"I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during the European Tour Players' Awards dinner," Garcia said. "I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner."
Whether Garcia, in his heart, is truly sorry or if this is an athlete doing damage control, praying he won't lose his endorsement deals, I don't know. But he definitely knows he put his foot in his mouth, and Tiger knows it too.
Woods tweeted Wednesday before Garcia's press conference:
"I'm confident that there is real regret that the remark was made. "The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf."
