'Saturday Night Live' Cast Rumors: Darrell Hammond Steps In For Late Announcer Don Pardo on SNL?
Recently, news broke about the passing of longtime and iconic 'Saturday Night Live' announcer, Don Pardo. Since then, many, including producers, are at a loss as to who will take over for Pardo on the show.
While Don Pardo's voice was truly legendary, there is some speculation floating around as to who can attempt to fill his shoes on 'SNL'. Recent rumors bring up the name Darrell Hammond, who was a series regular from 1995 to 2009.
In fact, Hammond had at one point in time stepped for Don Pardo and did the opening announcements for him. It was at that point that he realized how magnanimous Don Pardo's voice was.
In a recent interview with Grantland, Hammond had a few things to say about filling in for Pardo.
He mentioned how difficult it was to mirror an iconic voice like that, "I had a couple problems with it: The first is the strength of his voice. I remember one time I tried to do James Earl Jones and I coughed my way to apoplexy because his voice was so powerful."
Hammond had the same issue when trying to ditto Pardo's vocals, "The same with Don: His voice is so powerful it really wore my cords out. I remember seeing him the following week and I remember saying, "I don't ever want to do that again because I almost blew my cords out, and I don't want you to think that there's anyone like you or a way to replace you."
As it stands, there is currently no replacement for Don Pardo, and many feel that there cannot possibly be a replacement for the legend. However, others feel that there is hope on the horizon with Darrell Hammond.
In the interview, Hammond was asked if he'd ever be interested in taking over the role as announcer for 'Saturday Night Live'. He responded with, "I would be honored and thrilled. That would be lovely."
