Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge News: New Devices Met with Critical Reviews & Projections

After a year that saw the company lose its market share to chief rival Apple, along with other less expensive Chinese brands, Samsung unveiled two versions of its next flagship phones"”the Samsung Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Unfortunately, like most product launches, they have been met by mixed reviews.

"Samsung has clearly listened to feedback"”not just for the Galaxy S5, which missed the mark last year costing the company greatly"”but also the S4, which was a product that tried to cram in every piece of technology it could find," Ben Wood, head of research at the CCS Insight tech consultancy was quoted saying.

"The software has been made into a much more crisp and clear experience, the design of the product has clean lines and looks very nice, and the marketing campaign is expected to only pinpoint three things"”and that's certainly something that had been missing from Samsung's products for quite some time," Wood added pointing to the redesign (introducing a metal frame and glass back), camera upgrades (the front camera is now at 5MP, while the rear stays at 16MP), and in-built support for wireless charging, with support for two rival standards.

Rob Kerr of price comparison site uSwitch wasn't too impressed. "The dual-curved design just seems too gimmicky, too niche, to really be a crowd pleaser," he said of the S6 Edge's functionality, one of which allows for a quick way to bring up calls, texts, and other messages, along with providing a hint of callers' identities even when the device is face down.

Other changes include Samsung's TouchWiz made simpler, having cut down on pop-up messages. Curiously, as a product of the redesign, some old Galaxy features like water-resistance, and a microSD are notably absent from the new smart phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S6, and the S6 Edge go on sale on April 10, and will be available in 20 countries including the US, UK, and South Korea.
