Ronda Rousey Next Fight News, Rumors: Keen to Fight Correia for Revenge; White Rules Out Possibility For Now
Bethe Correia, the Brazilian mixed martial arts artist who is competing for the UFC women's bantamweight championship, is keen to fight champion Ronda Rousey. However, the latter has kept quite regarding a Correia fight thus far. On the other hand, Rousey has been openly talking about other possible opponents, who have yet to sign in with the UFC.
Nevertheless, since Correia defeated Shayna Baszler, Rousey's friend and training partner, in very remarkable manner last Saturday at UFC 177, it now seems that Rousey is getting interested in fighting her.
Addressing a press conference after Saturday's fight, UFC president Dana White said, "As soon as (Correia) started talking, (Rousey) texted me and said, 'I want that fight; I want it now,'" adding, "'I want it before someone else beats her.'"
In fact, Baszler is Rousey's second teammate among the "Four Horsewomen" who lost to Correia. Although Rousey may be looking to avenge the defeat of her teammates, as of now, White doesn't appear to be too interested in making that fight happen.
Talking about the possibility of such a fight, White said, "I said, 'Calm down, lady. You've got other people to fight. We'll figure it out.'"
By saying "other people", White may possibly be referring to Gina Carano, who is rumored to have signed with the UFC a few months ago. Although former world boxing champion Holly Holm is also a new UFC signee, and is in the mix, she wants to have a few tune-up fights prior to jumping into the octagon with Rousey.
Another fighter and a former top contender, Cat Zingano, is also returning at UFC 178 this month after being on the sidelines for more than a year owing to injuries and personal issues. A win over Amanda Nunes may possibly put Zingano right back into contention for the title.
As it stands, despite her 3-0 record in the UFC, Correia may have to overcome another top-10 opponent prior to getting a shot at Rousey.
On a side note, she seemed excellent on Saturday, pushing Baszler against the fence and throwing hard striking combinations, compelling the referee to stop the fight in the second round; Correia's first win by stoppage in the UFC.
Commenting on Correia's performance Saturday, White said, "That was crazy," adding, "The punches she hit (Baszler) with, I haven't seen anything like that since (Phil) Baroni (against) (Dave) Menne. She looked good tonight. That's what's going to get her a fight with Rousey."
