Roger Federer 1,000th Win News: Swiss Tennis Ace's Milestone Win
Current World No. 2 ranked tennis player Roger Federer won his 1,000th international match on Sunday, Jan. 11, when he defeated Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4 in the Brisbane International final.
Federer is the third player in the history of tennis to achieve this feat - the others being Jimmy Conors (1,253 wins) and Ivan Lendl (1,071 wins).
According to Latin Post, Federer began on a strong foot when he broke Raonic's serve in the third game of the match and went on to win the opening set. At this stage, it appeared like the Swiss tennis ace would run away with a straight set win. However, but Raonic succeeded in forcing a tiebreaker and ultimately pushed the match into a decider.
Federer, who has won 17 Grand Slams thus far, began the third set with an ace. Nevertheless, he had to save three break-point chances to win the opening match of the final set. On the other hand, despite a number of chances to grab the momentum, Raonic had to accept defeat at the hands of the more-experienced Federer in the final.
Talking to ESPN after the memorable victory, Federer said, "It's almost nicer winning this way through a tight match with nerves and humid conditions against a great player in a final," adding, "It means so much more than just running away with it. I guess I was much happier having to go three sets in the end."
When asked to comment on his 1,000th victory, the 33-year-old Swiss tennis star acknowledged, "Clearly it's a special day for me, winning a title plus getting to the magic number of 1,000." He went on to add, "It feels very different to any other match I've ever won. All those numbers didn't mean anything to me, but for some reason 1,000 means a lot because it's such a huge number. Just alone to count to 1,000 is going to take a while."
Now, Federer will be trying to win his 18th Grand Slam title when he competes at the 2015 Australian Open in Melbourne next week.
