Robin Roberts Steal the Show at ESPYs: awarded Arthur Ashe Courage Award yesterday; VIDEO INCLUDED
Robin Roberts, a broadcast journalist with ESPN and ABC, was award the Arthur Ashe Courage Award yesterday evening at the ESPYs.
In the last year, Roberts has overcome health battles with myelodysplastic syndrome, after defeated breast cancer five short years ago, becoming a symbol of strength and endurance to those around her.
The award is given to recipients who "reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the pass of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost." Roberts was met with a standing ovation after LeBron James present the award.
Roberts became an inspiration to millions when she returned to work after several hospital stays, where she continues to anchor "Good Morning America".
Roberts said, "There are some people who say, 'Why do you want to get back to work?' " she said. "But you want to go back to your life. And it's quite apparent that I enjoy what I do. I wanted to show people what it is like to live with an illness."
In her heart wrenching speech that stole the show, Roberts said, ""There are many worthy of holding this honor, others who have exhibited far more courage, strength and resilience, and it's humbling for me to represent you tonight," Roberts said after being presented with the award by LeBron James. "I draw strength from you. You give me the courage to face down any challenge, to know when fear knocks, to let faith answer the door."
