Rihanna Banned from Dating by Her Mother, 'I Wasn't Allowed to Date'

Pop star Rihanna admitted to Teen Vogue magazine in a recent interview that her mother Monica Braithwaite banned her from dating as teen.

The hit maker was banned from having a boyfriend until her late teens and when she became of age, her mother continued to discourage her from getting involved with boys then.

"I wasn't allowed to date. At 13 my mom would tell me, 'You can have a boyfriend when you're 16!' And then at 16 she'd say, 'I never said that - and as a matter of fact, it's 40!' " the singer told teen vogue.

The Bajan star accepted the first-ever AMA Icon Award in 2013 and it was the first time mainstream media got to see her mother in front of the camera as she presented her daughter with the award.

Braithwaite, a very proud mom, started her speech by acknowledging God. "First of all I'd liked to say all praises and honor be to God Almighty through Jesus."  She then added, "Rihanna I'm so proud of you tonight. I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused."

Her mom's strict parenting has not stopped the singer from posting a number of racy bikini shots on her Instagram page lately. In the interview, the 25-year old also went on to reveal that she was self-conscious as a teenager growing up in Barbados.

"Flat chest and mosquito-bitten skin" were a "horrible combination," she said.

Far from those insecurities Rihanna is now the new face of M.A.C. Viva Glam lipstick, and is supporting M.A.C.'s AIDS fund, which has so far raised $300 million to help fight HIV and AIDS.

The songstress explained her association with the great cause to Teen VOGUE said, "I've been around so many people who have been affected by HIV and AIDS. It's my turn to spread awareness. Because when people don't talk about this, they feel like it's not happening."
