Rays vs. Marlins Preview & Livestream

The Miami Marlins have had bad luck over the last several years, especially against the in-state rival Tampa Bay Rays. The bad news for Marlins fans: It only figures to get worse for them in 2013.

The two teams start a 4 game series this week, with the first two being played in Tampa Bay and the second set being played in Miami on Wednesday and Thursday. The Marlins (13-37) are making history this year, and not the good kind. They are off to the worst start the the MLB has seen since the 2006 Kansas City Royals. But to make matters worst, no NL team has done this poorly in over 25 years. Like I said, not exactly "good history."

Though the 'Citrus Series' between the two teams is competitive (25-24), The Rays have won 9 of the last 12 meetings between the two teams. Those teams had poor offenses, but this year's looks to be even worse with slugger Giancarlo Stanton spending most of the season on the DL this year. without their big bats in the lineup, the skid against the Rays looks to continue today.

Tampa Bay was on the other side of that coin against the Yankees on Sunday, with an offensive outburst against the New York Yankees in a recent 8-3 victory recently. Sean Rodriguez and James Loney each hit a two-run homer in the game. "You put up eight runs against the Yankees, definitely something good, but the 'W' is all that matters," Rodriguez said.

Team captain and third baseman Evan Longoria had a quiet weekend series with only three hits in 13 at-bats. What's more is that he's gone five straight games without a run batted in. This is particularly trouble for the Rays, as Longoria has traditionally been a source for power and runs for the team. In spite of his great careers numbers, he's never had much success against the cross-state rival Marlins, hitting only .227 in 24 games. Longoria and the Rays will face Miami starter Jose Fernandez (2-2, 3.31) for the first time this season. Fernandez has been dominant against right-handers, holding them to a .215 average.
